The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is a safety feature that prevents a vehicle’s wheels from locking up during hard braking. Instead of allowing the tires to skid, ABS rapidly applies and releases brake pressure many times per second, helping the driver maintain steering control while reducing the risk of accidents.

How ABS Works

  1. Driver Presses the Brake Pedal
    • The braking process begins normally when you apply the brakes.
  2. Wheel Speed Sensors Monitor Each Wheel
    • Sensors continuously measure the speed of each wheel.
  3. Lock-Up Detection
    • If one or more wheels slow down much faster than the others, the ABS detects that they are about to lock.
  4. Hydraulic Modulator Adjusts Brake Pressure
    • The ABS hydraulic unit quickly reduces brake pressure to the affected wheel.
    • It then reapplies pressure once the wheel starts rotating again.
