How to Create Discounts and Coupons in PrestaShop

How to Create Discounts and Coupons in PrestaShop

PrestaShop allows you to create discounts using Cart Rules and Catalog Price Rules. These features are useful for offering coupon codes, percentage discounts, fixed discounts, free shipping, and product-specific promotions.

1. Create a Coupon Code with Cart Rules

A Cart Rule is the best option when you want customers to enter a coupon code at checkout.

Step 1: Open Cart Rules

From your PrestaShop back office:

Catalog → Discounts → Cart Rules

Click Create new cart rule.

Step 2: Enter Coupon Information

Fill in:

  • Name – Internal name for the promotion
  • Description – Optional description
  • Code – Enter a coupon code such as SAVE10
  • Highlight – Enable this if you want the coupon to be prominently displayed to customers
  • Partial use – Allows customers to use the remaining value of a coupon later
  • Priority – Determines which promotion takes precedence when multiple rules apply

For example:

Name: Summer Discount
Code: SUMMER10

Step 3: Set Conditions

Under Conditions, you can control who can use the coupon.

You can specify:

  • Minimum purchase amount
  • Customer group
  • Specific customer
  • Country
  • Currency
  • Carrier
  • Product/category
  • Number of times the coupon can be used
  • Number of times one customer can use it
  • Start and expiration dates

Example:

Minimum purchase: ₹2,000
Customer group: All customers
Valid from: September 10 to September 30
Total available: 500 uses

Step 4: Configure the Discount

Go to Actions and choose what the customer receives.

Common options include:

Percentage discount

  • Example: 10% off

Amount discount

  • Example: ₹500 off

Free shipping

  • Enable free shipping for qualifying orders.

You can also choose whether the discount applies to:

  • The entire order
  • Specific products
  • Specific categories
  • Shipping

Step 5: Save the Coupon

Click Save.

Your coupon is now available according to the conditions you configured.

2. Create an Automatic Product Discount

If you don’t want customers to enter a coupon code, use a Catalog Price Rule.

Go to:

Catalog → Discounts → Catalog Price Rules

Click Create new catalog price rule.

You can configure:

  • Product/category
  • Customer group
  • Country
  • Currency
  • Minimum quantity
  • Start date
  • End date
  • Discount percentage or fixed amount

For example:

Category: Shoes
Minimum quantity: 1
Discount: 15%
Validity: September 10–30

Customers will automatically see the discounted price without entering a coupon.

3. Example: Create a 10% Coupon

Suppose you want to give customers 10% off orders above ₹1,500.

Use:

SettingExample
NameWelcome Discount
CodeWELCOME10
Minimum purchase₹1,500
Discount typePercentage
Discount10%
CustomersAll
Start dateSeptember 10
End dateSeptember 30
Usage limit1,000
Per-customer limit1

After saving, test the coupon from the customer-facing store by adding products to the cart and entering WELCOME10.

4. Important Tips

  • Always set an expiration date for limited-time coupons.
  • Set a usage limit to prevent unlimited use.
  • Use customer groups when offering discounts only to wholesalers, retailers, or VIP customers.
  • Test the coupon before advertising it.
  • Check whether multiple discounts can be combined.
  • Use clear coupon codes such as WELCOME10, FESTIVE20, or NEWUSER500.
