How to Create Product Combinations and Attributes in PrestaShop

Product combinations and attributes are essential features in PrestaShop when you sell products that come in different sizes, colors, materials, or other variations. For example, a T-shirt may be available in Small, Medium, and Large, with each size offered in Black, White, and Blue.

PrestaShop allows you to create attributes first and then combine them into different product combinations.

What Are Product Attributes?

An attribute is a characteristic or variation of a product.

Examples include:

  • Size: Small, Medium, Large
  • Color: Red, Blue, Black
  • Material: Cotton, Leather
  • Storage: 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB
  • Weight: 500 g, 1 kg

Attributes give customers choices when purchasing a product.

What Is a Product Combination?

A combination is a specific version of a product created by combining two or more attributes.

For example:

T-Shirt

  • Black + Small
  • Black + Medium
  • Black + Large
  • White + Small
  • White + Medium
  • White + Large

Each combination can have its own:

  • Price
  • Stock quantity
  • SKU/reference
  • Barcode
  • Weight
  • Image
  • Availability

This makes combinations particularly useful when different product variations have different prices or inventory.

Step 1: Open the Attributes Section

Log in to your PrestaShop Back Office and go to the Catalog section.

Look for Attributes & Features. Depending on your PrestaShop version, the exact menu wording or location may differ.

The attributes section is where you create the different options customers can select.

Step 2: Create an Attribute Group

Before creating individual attribute values, create an attribute group.

For example:

Attribute Group: Size

Then add values such as:

  • Small
  • Medium
  • Large
  • XL

You could create another group:

Attribute Group: Color

With values:

  • Black
  • White
  • Blue
  • Red

Keeping attributes organized into groups makes them easier to manage.

Step 3: Add Attribute Values

After creating an attribute group, add the values that customers can choose.

For example:

Color

  • Black
  • White
  • Blue

Size

  • Small
  • Medium
  • Large

Each value belongs to its respective attribute group.

Step 4: Open the Product

Go to Catalog → Products and select the product for which you want to create combinations.

For example:

Product: Men’s Cotton T-Shirt

Open the product editing page and find the Options or Combinations section, depending on your PrestaShop version.

Step 5: Create Product Combinations

Select the option to add or generate combinations.

Choose the relevant attributes.

For example:

Color: Black
Size: Medium

This creates the combination:

Black / Medium

You can repeat the process for other variations.

Alternatively, you can use the combination generator to create multiple combinations automatically.

For example:

ColorSize
BlackSmall
BlackMedium
BlackLarge
WhiteSmall
WhiteMedium
WhiteLarge

PrestaShop can generate these combinations based on the attribute values you select.

Step 6: Set Combination Prices

Different combinations can have different prices.

For example:

CombinationPrice
Black / Small₹799
Black / Medium₹799
Black / Large₹849
White / Small₹799
White / Medium₹799
White / Large₹849

You can configure an additional price or other combination-specific pricing information where supported by your PrestaShop version.

Step 7: Add Stock Quantities

Inventory should be managed separately for each combination when variations have separate stock.

For example:

  • Black / Small — 15 units
  • Black / Medium — 25 units
  • Black / Large — 10 units
  • White / Small — 12 units
  • White / Medium — 20 units
  • White / Large — 8 units

This prevents customers from ordering a variation that is actually out of stock.

Step 8: Add SKU and Barcode Information

You can assign a unique product reference/SKU to individual combinations.

For example:

  • TSH-BLK-S
  • TSH-BLK-M
  • TSH-BLK-L
  • TSH-WHT-S
  • TSH-WHT-M
  • TSH-WHT-L

If your business uses barcodes, you can also enter the appropriate barcode for each combination.

Unique references make inventory management, order processing, and reporting easier.

Step 9: Assign Images to Combinations

Images can help customers understand exactly what variation they are selecting.

For example, if you sell a T-shirt in different colors, upload images showing:

  • Black T-shirt
  • White T-shirt
  • Blue T-shirt

You can associate the relevant image with the appropriate combination so customers can see the selected variation.

Step 10: Save the Product

After entering the combinations, prices, stock, references, and images, save the product.

Visit the storefront and test the product page.

Make sure customers can:

  1. Select an attribute.
  2. Select another attribute if required.
  3. See the correct combination.
  4. See the correct price.
  5. Add the combination to the cart.

Best Practices for Product Combinations

Use Clear Attribute Names

Instead of creating confusing names such as “Option 1” and “Option 2,” use descriptive names like Color, Size, or Material.

Keep Attribute Values Consistent

Use consistent naming throughout your store.

For example, use:

Medium

instead of mixing:

  • M
  • Medium
  • MED

Use Unique SKUs

Give every important combination its own reference. This makes stock tracking much easier.

Check Stock Regularly

If each combination has separate inventory, update quantities regularly to avoid overselling.

Use Good Product Images

For products with visual variations such as colors or designs, use clear images for each variation.

Test the Customer Experience

Always test your combinations from the storefront before making the product available to customers.

Example: Creating a T-Shirt With Combinations

Suppose you sell a T-shirt with:

Colors: Black, White, Blue
Sizes: S, M, L

This produces:

3 × 3 = 9 combinations

#ColorSize
1BlackS
2BlackM
3BlackL
4WhiteS
5WhiteM
6WhiteL
7BlueS
8BlueM
9BlueL

Each combination can then have its own stock, SKU, image, price adjustment, and other product-specific information.

Conclusion

Creating product attributes and combinations in PrestaShop allows you to sell products with multiple variations while keeping your catalog and inventory organized. Start by creating attribute groups such as Color and Size, add their values, and then use those values to create combinations for individual products.

Properly configured combinations make it easier for customers to select the exact product they want and help store owners manage inventory, pricing, SKUs, and product images more efficiently.
