How to Create SEO-Friendly URLs in PrestaShop

SEO-friendly URLs make your PrestaShop website easier for search engines and visitors to understand. A clean URL should clearly describe the product, category, or page without unnecessary numbers, symbols, or complicated parameters.

1. Enable Friendly URLs

Log in to your PrestaShop Back Office.

Go to:

Shop Parameters → Traffic & SEO

Look for Friendly URL and enable it.

Depending on your PrestaShop version, the exact menu names may differ slightly.

A normal URL might look like:

example.com/index.php?id_product=25&controller=product

A friendlier URL looks like:

example.com/black-leather-wallet

The second version is easier for users and search engines to understand.

2. Create Short Product URLs

Use the main product keyword in the URL.

❌ Poor URL

example.com/product/12345-black-wallet-new-product

✅ Better URL

example.com/black-leather-wallet

Keep URLs:

  • Short
  • Descriptive
  • Relevant to the product
  • Easy to read

3. Optimize Category URLs

Category URLs should clearly describe the category.

❌ Poor

example.com/category?id=25

✅ Better

example.com/mens-wallets

Or:

example.com/mens-leather-wallets

This creates a logical structure for both users and search engines.

4. Use Hyphens

Use hyphens to separate words.

Good

black-leather-wallet

Avoid

black_leather_wallet

Avoid

blackleatherwallet

Hyphens make individual words easier to identify.

5. Avoid Unnecessary Words

Don’t make URLs unnecessarily long.

Too long:

example.com/best-quality-premium-black-leather-wallet-for-men-online

Better:

example.com/black-leather-wallet-men

The URL should describe the page without trying to include every possible keyword.

6. Use Lowercase URLs

Keep URLs lowercase.

Recommended:

/mens-leather-wallet

Avoid creating variations such as:

/Mens-Leather-Wallet

Consistent lowercase URLs also help prevent unnecessary URL variations.

7. Add Keywords Naturally

Include the primary topic of the page when appropriate.

For example, if the product is:

Men’s Black Leather Wallet

A suitable URL could be:

/mens-black-leather-wallet

Don’t repeat keywords unnecessarily.

❌ Keyword stuffing

/wallet-black-wallet-leather-wallet-men

✅ Natural

/mens-black-leather-wallet

8. Optimize CMS Page URLs

PrestaShop CMS pages should also have meaningful URLs.

For example:

Page title:
How to Choose a Leather Wallet

URL:
/how-to-choose-a-leather-wallet

Instead of:

/cms/15

9. Avoid Changing URLs Frequently

Once a product or category URL has been indexed by Google, avoid changing it unnecessarily.

Changing URLs can cause:

  • Broken links
  • Lost backlinks
  • 404 errors
  • SEO problems

If you must change a URL, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new URL.

10. Check Duplicate URLs

Make sure the same content isn’t accessible through multiple URLs.

For example:

/black-leather-wallet

and

/black-leather-wallet-123

should not both serve essentially the same page without an appropriate canonical/redirect strategy.

11. Use Canonical URLs

Canonical URLs help search engines understand which URL should be considered the primary version when similar or duplicate URLs exist.

This is particularly important for ecommerce websites where filters, sorting, and product combinations can sometimes create multiple URL variations.

12. Don’t Put Dates in Product URLs

For products, avoid unnecessary dates such as:

/2026/09/black-leather-wallet

A cleaner URL is:

/black-leather-wallet

This allows you to keep the same URL even when the product remains available for several years.

Example PrestaShop SEO URL Structure

A simple ecommerce structure could look like:

example.com/
example.com/mens-wallets
example.com/mens-wallets/leather-wallet
example.com/black-leather-wallet
example.com/contact-us
example.com/about-us

This creates a clear structure for visitors and search engines.
