How to Optimize PrestaShop Product Images for SEO

Optimizing product images in PrestaShop can improve Google Image Search visibility, page speed, user experience, and overall SEO performance. A well-optimized product image should be high quality while also being small enough to load quickly.

1. Use Descriptive Image File Names

Don’t upload images with generic names such as:

  • IMG001.jpg
  • DSC1234.jpg
  • product1.png

Instead, use descriptive names containing the product name.

Example:

mens-black-leather-wallet.jpg

This helps search engines understand what the image represents.

2. Choose the Right Image Format

For most PrestaShop stores:

  • WebP – Excellent choice for smaller file sizes and good quality.
  • JPEG/JPG – Good for photographs and product images.
  • PNG – Useful when transparency is required.
  • SVG – Suitable for logos and simple graphics.

For photographic product images, WebP or properly compressed JPEG is generally preferable.

3. Compress Images Before Uploading

Large images can slow down your product pages.

Try to keep product images as small as possible without making them visibly blurry.

For example:

Before: 1.5 MB
After: 150–300 KB

The exact size depends on the image dimensions and quality.

4. Use Appropriate Image Dimensions

Don’t upload a huge 5000 × 5000 px image if your store only displays it at a much smaller size.

A practical workflow is:

Original photo → Resize → Compress → WebP/JPEG → Upload to PrestaShop

Also make sure your product images have consistent dimensions so your category and product pages look professional.

5. Add Useful Alt Text

Alt text helps search engines and improves accessibility.

Instead of:

image

Use:

Black leather wallet for men

Or:

Men's black leather wallet with multiple card slots

Keep the description natural and relevant to the actual image.

Avoid keyword stuffing:

best cheap wallet wallet online buy wallet India

6. Optimize Every Product Image

Don’t optimize only the main product image.

If a product has several images, give each one a meaningful description.

For example, for a black leather wallet:

ImageSuggested description
Main imageBlack leather wallet for men
Back viewBack view of black leather wallet
InsideInterior card slots of leather wallet
Side viewSide profile of black leather wallet
Close-upLeather texture close-up

This gives search engines additional context.

7. Use Multiple Product Views

Good ecommerce product photography can also improve conversions.

Consider adding:

  • Front view
  • Back view
  • Side view
  • Close-up
  • Product in use
  • Packaging
  • Size comparison

8. Make Images Mobile-Friendly

A large percentage of ecommerce traffic comes from smartphones.

Check your PrestaShop product pages on:

  • Mobile
  • Tablet
  • Desktop

Make sure images load quickly and don’t cause the page layout to jump around.

9. Use Lazy Loading

Lazy loading allows images below the initial screen to load when the visitor approaches them.

This can reduce the amount of content that needs to load immediately and can improve page performance.

However, the main product image visible when the page opens generally shouldn’t be unnecessarily delayed.

10. Create SEO-Friendly Product Image URLs

Where possible, use meaningful filenames and a clean image structure.

For example:

Good:

black-leather-wallet-men.webp

Poor:

product_4587_final_new2.jpg

The filename should describe the product rather than contain meaningless numbers.

11. Don’t Put Important Product Information Only Inside Images

Avoid relying on an image alone for information such as:

  • Product name
  • Price
  • Features
  • Specifications
  • Offers

Put important information in normal HTML text as well. Search engines can understand the page content much better this way.

12. Check Your Image SEO With Google

After optimizing your images, you can check whether Google is indexing your product pages and images.

Useful areas to monitor include:

  • Google Search Console
  • Google Images
  • Core Web Vitals
  • PageSpeed Insights

Look for improvements in image loading speed, mobile performance, and image search visibility.
