Regenerative braking is a technology used in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles (HEVs) that recovers energy normally lost during braking. Instead of wasting kinetic energy as heat, the vehicle converts part of it into electricity and stores it in the battery.

How Regenerative Braking Works

  1. Vehicle Is Moving
    • The electric motor uses battery power to drive the wheels.
  2. Driver Releases the Accelerator or Presses the Brake
    • The vehicle begins to slow down.
  3. Motor Becomes a Generator
    • Instead of consuming electricity, the electric motor reverses its role and generates electricity.
  4. Energy Is Sent Back to the Battery
    • The generated electricity recharges the battery pack.
  5. Vehicle Slows Down
    • The generator creates resistance, helping slow the vehicle while recovering energy.

Normal Driving

  • Battery → Electric Motor → Wheels

During Regenerative Braking

  • Wheels → Electric Motor (Generator) → Battery
