The Seven Wonders of the World
The New Seven Wonders of the World were chosen in a global vote in 2007 to celebrate some of humanity’s greatest architectural and cultural achievements.
1. Great Wall of China
- Built over many centuries to protect China from invasions.
- Stretches more than 21,000 km (13,000 miles).
- It is one of the longest man-made structures ever built.
2. Petra
- An ancient city carved into pink sandstone cliffs.
- Built by the Nabataeans over 2,000 years ago.
- Known as the “Rose City” because of its stone color.
3. Christ the Redeemer
- A giant Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ.
- Stands 30 meters (98 feet) tall, with arms stretching 28 meters (92 feet).
- Overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro.
4. Machu Picchu
- A 15th-century Inca citadel high in the Andes Mountains.
- Famous for its impressive stonework and mountain scenery.
- One of the world’s best-preserved archaeological sites.
5. Chichén Itzá
- A major city of the ancient Maya civilization.
- Home to the famous El Castillo pyramid.
- Demonstrates remarkable achievements in astronomy and architecture.
6. Colosseum
- The largest ancient amphitheater ever built.
- Completed around 80 CE.
- Hosted gladiator contests and public events.
7. Taj Mahal
- Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
- Constructed between 1632 and 1653.
- Renowned for its white marble architecture and beautiful gardens.
