Hair turns gray when it gradually loses its natural pigment. This happens because the cells that produce hair color become less active over time. While aging is the most common cause, genetics, lifestyle, and certain medical conditions can also play a role.

What gives hair its color?

Hair gets its color from a pigment called melanin, which is produced by specialized cells called melanocytes inside the hair follicles.

There are two main types of melanin:

  • Eumelanin – Produces black and brown hair.
  • Pheomelanin – Produces blonde and red hair.

As melanin production decreases, hair becomes gray, silver, or eventually white.

Why does hair turn gray?

1. Aging

As you get older, melanocytes gradually produce less melanin. New hair grows with less pigment, making it appear gray.

2. Genetics

Your genes largely determine when your hair starts turning gray. Some people notice gray hairs in their 20s, while others may not until their 50s or later.

3. Oxidative stress

Over time, natural chemical reactions in the body can damage pigment-producing cells, reducing melanin production.

4. Vitamin deficiencies

Low levels of certain nutrients may contribute to premature graying, including:

  • Vitamin B12
  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Vitamin D (in some cases)

5. Certain medical conditions

Rarely, premature graying can be linked to:

  • Thyroid disorders
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Vitiligo
  • Some genetic conditions

Can stress cause gray hair?

Stress alone doesn’t instantly turn hair gray overnight. However, chronic stress may affect the stem cells that replenish melanocytes, potentially contributing to earlier graying in some people.

Can gray hair turn black again?

Usually, age-related gray hair is permanent because the pigment-producing cells have become inactive or are depleted. However, if graying is caused by a treatable issue—such as a vitamin deficiency or certain medical conditions—addressing the underlying cause may allow some hair to regain pigment.

Can you prevent gray hair?

You can’t completely prevent age-related graying, but you can support healthy hair by:

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • Avoiding smoking.
  • Managing stress.
  • Treating any underlying nutrient deficiencies or medical conditions.

Fun Fact

The hair itself doesn’t “change color” after it grows. Each new strand grows from the follicle with the amount of pigment available at that time. That’s why gray hair appears gradually as new hairs replace older ones.
