Yawning is a natural, involuntary action in which you open your mouth wide, take a deep breath, and then exhale. Scientists still don’t know the exact reason we yawn, but several well-supported theories explain why it happens.

Why do we yawn?

1. It may help cool the brain

One leading theory suggests that yawning helps regulate brain temperature. The deep breath and movement of the jaw increase blood flow and allow cooler air to circulate, which may help the brain function efficiently.

2. It increases alertness

Yawning often occurs when you’re tired, bored, or transitioning between sleep and wakefulness. It may help you become more awake by increasing heart rate and blood flow.

3. It’s contagious

Seeing, hearing, or even thinking about someone yawning can make you yawn too. Researchers believe contagious yawning may be linked to empathy and social bonding, although the exact mechanism is still being studied.

4. It occurs during changes in activity

People commonly yawn:

  • Before going to sleep
  • Just after waking up
  • During long periods of inactivity
  • While sitting through boring tasks
  • Before important events, such as sports or public speaking

Common triggers

  • Lack of sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Boredom
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Watching someone else yawn
  • Reading or talking about yawning

Is yawning a sign of illness?

Occasional yawning is completely normal. However, excessive yawning may sometimes be associated with:

  • Sleep disorders
  • Certain medications
  • Neurological conditions
  • Heart-related problems (rare)
  • Sleep deprivation

If you’re yawning excessively without being tired or it interferes with daily life, it’s worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Fun fact

Simply reading about yawning or looking at pictures of people yawning can trigger a yawn in many people. If you felt like yawning while reading this, you’re not alone!
